What Happens During Laser Hair Removal

Lasering works by passing a beam of laser light into either single or groups of hair follicles with enough power to disable or destroy the root. This process is called selective Photothermolysis. It is selective because with the right laser and settings, it targets only the hair and not the skin.

What a treatment involves

Laser hair removal treatment

Prior to a treatment you will need to have a detailed consultation to assess your suitability. Factors that will affect your suitability include the medication you are on and your skin and hair colour. Assuming you are suitable a patch test will be done to ensure you are unlikely to have an adverse reaction.

A few days before treatment you'll be asked to shave or your hair will be cut very close to the skin.

After the laser has been calibrated for your specific skin and hair colour you will be asked to wear special eye wear to protect from possible laser damage.

Your skin will then be cooled in preparation for lasering using a gel, cold air or cryogen spray.

After an initial pulse of light the practitioner will pause to ensure not reaction occurred before proceeding with the laser hair removal treatment. During treatment you are likely to feel slight discomfort with every pulse and mild redness may occur, this will disappear over the next 12 -24 hours. You may have a cold pack applied after the treatment to help with this.

Most people will be scheduled for another treatment 4-6 weeks later. This will be repeated until hair growth has been sufficiently reduced or eliminated (normally 6- 8 treatments).

After each laser hair removal treatment, less hair should be found in the treatment area and what does grow should be finer.

Note: It the UK, it is illegal for a clinic to carry out laser or IPL treatments without being registered with the Healthcare Commission.
